The “PhilSew Baby Bib Charity Sew” -- Fun Sewing Endeavor and Enlightening Experience

The “Baby Bib Charity Sew” was launched at our March 2014 “I Love to Sew Club” sessions. Club members are sewing baby bibs to be donated the Pregnancy Assistance Center in Washington. THANK YOU to all who have already participated in the “PhilSew Baby Bib Charity Sew”!

Pictured above is Larry, owner of Phil’s Sewing Machines, Fritzie Alferman, Director of the Pregnancy Assistance Center, and Janet, Sewing Club Instructor for Phil’s Sewing Machines.

Fritzie Alferman, Director of the Pregnancy Assistance Center was the guest speaker at our “I Love to Sew Club” on Tuesday.  She explained how the Pregnancy Assistance Center helps mothers and families in need by assisting with the necessities for their babies.  It all began in 1974 when Monsignor Westhoff asked Fritzie to help one mother in need.  Fritzie generously continued to help others and this year marks her 40th year of service.  Fritzie is quick to point out that she couldn’t have done it alone.  She is helped by her daughter Stephanie, who is the Co-Director of the Center and by a staff of forty volunteers. Even more volunteers pitch in and help at special fund raising events.

Wednesday, we delivered 65 bibs, along with many pillowcases and other donated baby items to the center and enjoyed a tour of the facility.  It is amazing to see, and to learn about all the work the center provides to assist and educate new and expecting mothers in need.  The cleanliness and efficiency of their organized warehouse is a sure sign that the volunteers love and take pride in their work.  Yes, I said volunteers!  EVERYONE working at the Pregnancy Assistance Center is a volunteer!

While guiding our tour, Fritzie told us how pleased and surprised she was when she found out that our club members wanted to make baby bibs and pillowcases for the center.  She showed us the plastic barrel where donated bibs are stored, and you could say they are literally scraping the bottom of barrel!

There is always a need for more baby bibs as well as burp cloths, which is why this is an on-going project for our club. You can help at any time and any style of baby bibs and/or burp cloths are welcomed.  They may be made as simply or ornately as you choose.  Please no buttons or attachments that could become a choking hazard.

Take A Tour

Fritzie Alferman, Director of the Pregnancy Assistance Center visited our "I Love To Sew Club" to thank the members for their recent donation of baby bibs, pillow cases and other baby supplies.  She also spoke briefly about the operations of the Center.  They offer educational classes and many services for qualifying mothers in need. Fritzie was truly correct when she said you have to really see the operation to fully understand what they do.  Anyone who would like to schedule a tour may call her at (636) 239-1840.
As you can see from the pictures, it is a very well planned system.  Each newborn receives a layette, a box filled with basic items.  A list of the items needed for each layette is shown below.  If you are interested in donating any of the items, you may bring them to us or drop them off at the Center.  To receive a tax receipt for your donation, you should take it directly to the Center.   They are open Monday thru Friday, 10:00AM till 2:00PM.
The Pregnancy Assistance Center is very grateful for any donation.

Kraft-Tex Kraft Paper Fabric Challenge

Jill created this book bag that is perfect for your summer library visits.  She took on the challenge to make a project using the new “Kraft-Tex kraft paper fabric."  The contrast of the black and white stripes of the “paper fabric” along with a fun polka-dot lining and bright pink binding give this book bag pizzazz!  Jill added “Happy Handles” to make the bag easy to carry and attached a snap-hook on the inside to keep your library card handy.  What great bag to tote to the library!  The “Kraft-Tex kraft paper fabric” can be purchased at our store or online at:   http://www.philsew.mybigcommerce.com/fabric-paper/    The Happy Handles are available at:  http://www.philsew.mybigcommerce.com/patterns/happy-handles-kit/

April Sew Club Featured Kraft-Tex Kraft Paper Fabric

At our April, "I Love to Sew Club" Janet wowed the ladies with her version of the checkerboard placemat. Janet's inspiration came from the BabyLock “Patriotic Placemats” designed by Kelly Laws.
With some modification to the “Patriotic Placemat” pattern, Janet was able to create this fun “Checkerboard Placemat.” Janet used the Baby Lock Ovation serger wave stitch to finish the edges and the Baby Lock Sashiko to give the coaster a hand stitched look.

The checkerboard is made with "kraft-tex kraft paper fabric." This is the most interesting product to work with. It feels, wears, and looks like leather. It sews, cuts, and washes just
like fabric. Durable enough to make totes, belts, book covers and more!
I'm offering a "just for fun challenge" to Janet, Dottie, Lisa, Jill, and anyone else out there, to unleash their creativity with the "kraft-tex kraft paper fabric." I'll be posting the projects as they are completed so stay tuned! The "kraft-tex kraft paper fabric is available in our store or online at:  http://www.philsew.mybigcommerce.com/fabric/kraft-tex-fabric-paper/

It is available in three colors, natural, white, and black!
